This is a different league from a normal quiz, and we'll be straight with you about it. LockDown Browser takes over your computer for the exam — here's what that actually means, where its limits are, and what won't help.
Can Respondus LockDown Browser detect cheating?
LockDown Browser is a custom browser your instructor can require for an exam. While it's running, it takes control of your machine: you can't open other tabs or applications, copy or paste, print, or take screenshots, and you can't exit until you submit. It turns the open browser environment a normal quiz runs in into a locked box.
Many courses pair it with Respondus Monitor, which uses your webcam to record you and your surroundings throughout the exam. Automated analysis flags things like leaving the frame, looking away repeatedly, or another face appearing — and the instructor reviews the flagged clips. That combination is what makes it genuinely hard to beat.
It isn't all-seeing. LockDown Browser controls the testing device, but it can't see a second phone, a person off-camera, or notes outside the webcam's view. Still, Monitor's recording makes obvious off-screen glances a real risk, so don't treat those gaps as safe.
